The Summit of the Future is a high-level event set for September 20-23, 2024, in New York. It aims to forge a new international consensus on shaping a better present and securing our future. This pivotal gathering will bring together world leaders at a crucial time when effective global cooperation is vital yet challenging due to mistrust and outdated structures that don’t reflect current realities.

This summit is a moment to rebuild trust and show that international cooperation can successfully meet agreed goals and tackle new threats and opportunities. Leaders at the event will adopt the Pact for the Future, which includes the Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. Recent global shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, and environmental crises have tested our international institutions. Unity around our shared principles and goals is more urgent than ever. The Summit of the Future will reassert commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Charter. It aims to rejuvenate the multilateral system to positively impact people’s lives.

The Summit was inspired by the Our Common Agenda report. This was a response by the UN Secretary-General to a call from Member States for ideas to better respond to current and future challenges. The report called for a renewal of trust and solidarity at all levels — among peoples, countries, and generations. It argued for a fundamental rethink of our political, economic, and social systems to ensure they deliver fairness and effectiveness for everyone.

Member States have agreed to hold the Summit in September 2024. They also agreed that the Summit would result in a Pact for the Future. The Summit and the Pact aim to reaffirm the UN Charter, revitalize multilateralism, boost the implementation of existing commitments, find solutions to new challenges, and restore trust. This event is a strategic forum and a crucial step toward redefining the future of international collaboration.
