The 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 30) is set to take place from 10th to 21st November 2025 in Belém, Brazil. This significant event will host the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 30), the 20th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 20), and the seventh meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 7).

These meetings aim to finalise the enhanced transparency framework, establish a new collective quantified goal on climate finance, and assess global progress through the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement. Additionally, the 63rd sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 63) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 63) will also convene.

On January 21, 2025, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva appointed André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, a seasoned diplomat and climate negotiator, as the COP 30 President. Under his leadership, COP 30 will address themes like greenhouse gas reductions, adaptation measures, financing for developing nations, renewable energy advancements, forest conservation, and biodiversity preservation.

The Brazilian government has announced plans to invest BRL 4.7 billion in preparing Belém to host over 60,000 participants, including heads of state, diplomats, entrepreneurs, and activists. As COP 30 is hosted near the Amazon rainforest, it highlights the importance of the Amazon’s role in global climate regulation and biodiversity conservation.

High-level discussions will focus on barriers to climate action, financing support for just transitions, and ensuring ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for 2025. These sessions will leverage platforms such as the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, UNFCCC subsidiary sessions, and G20 meetings to advance international cooperation.

The Brazilian government is committed to engaging with international partners, civil society, and indigenous communities to foster inclusive and effective climate action. COP 30 represents a unique opportunity to unite global efforts for sustainable development and equitable climate solutions.
