These meetings are crucial as they aim to complete the first enhanced transparency framework and establish a new collective quantified goal on finance, among other important matters. Additionally, the 61st sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 61) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 61) will also convene.
On March 21, 2024, the COP 28 Presidency from the United Arab Emirates, the Azerbaijani COP 29 Presidency, and the Brazilian COP 30 Presidency issued a letter to parties outlining a ‘Roadmap to Mission 1.5°C.’ This roadmap aims to significantly enhance international cooperation and the international enabling environment to boost ambition in the next round of nationally determined contributions (NDCs). The goal is to enhance action and implementation throughout this critical decade to keep the 1.5°C target within reach.
The host has announced plans to host a series of high-level political convenings to evaluate barriers to NDC development. These meetings will include sessions during the Germany-hosted 15th Petersberg Climate Dialogue, the 60th sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies, the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), and a special session at the opening of COP 29. Discussions will focus on the “quantity and quality of support needed” to ensure the next round of NDCs, due in 2025, can deliver just climate transitions aligned with the 1.5°C goal. Additionally, the Presidencies will engage with key thematic and political platforms like the Group of 20 (G20) to direct existing knowledge and resources towards ambitious NDC development.
